What started as a small breast cancer charity has turned into one of the Lowcountry’s largest events — attracting an estimated 1,500 walkers and runners from 49 states and 17 countries, raising an estimated $125,000 that benefits breast cancer testing and treatment in Beaufort County. For 75 percent of the participants, Pledge The Pink has become an annual trip to the Lowcountry — when they spend tourism dollars on hotels, restaurants and shopping.
“You’ll find us island-hopping every fall — walking, running, and crawling 30 miles, across three islands,” said Laura Morgan, the event’s founder and organizer. “We wear pink, give sweaty hugs, build blisters, sing songs, and most importantly: save lives.”
The pink clad participants are often referred to as FlockStars, a tribute to Pledge the Pink’s beloved pink flamingo mascot named Fancy. Many of the participants are fighting cancer, survived cancer or are logging their miles in honor of someone they love.
“It’s about coming together, in honor of your sisters or mothers or wives. It’s about lacing up your sneakers and getting to mile 1,” Morgan said. “It’s the friendships you form at mile 9, the blisters that greet you day 2, the finish lines you cross, and the people you cross them with.”
Pink flamingos have already begun popping up on Hilton Head and in Bluffton. Event organizers have fun activities planned for the three-day event including a golf cart decorating contest, “Best Bluffton Spirit” contest, and flamingo yard contest.
“Let’s roll out the pink carpet and show them some lovin’ as they shake their tail feathers thru 30 miles across the Lowcountry,” said Morgan.
