Why Did You Bring Your Clubs?

When I ask anyone about flying with their golf clubs these days, I never hear the words “fun”, “convenient” or “cheap”. In fact, you don’t need a dictionary to look up the words I do hear to describe your relationship with your airline after you’ve flown your golf clubs on vacation—those words aren’t in there.

So if you’re flying into the Lowcountry to play some of our terrific courses late this summer or this fall, do what more and more golfers are doing and rent clubs from the courses you’re playing.

“But isn’t that expensive,” you say?

Not if you play it right. If you book with any of the multi-course operators, and play more than one of their courses, they’ll likely cut you a pretty sweet deal. And if you look at it another way, you could take advantage of the trip to try out all the latest equipment from most of the major manufacturers before you think about buying the new toys this Christmas.

The Sea Pines Resort rents Titleist clubs at all three of its courses, with both the AP-1’s and AP-2’s available in regular or stiff shafts, left or right handed, with Vokey wedges and Scotty Cameron putters. They’ll even throw in some Pro V-1 balls if you rent clubs for multiple rounds.

The Palmetto Dunes Resort features TaylorMade clubs at the Robert Trent Jones course, with Nike Coverts at the George Fazio and Arthur Hills courses.

Heritage Golf keeps the latest Titleist equipment available at all three Port Royal courses, Shipyard, Palmetto Hall and Oyster Reef and will throw in a sleeve of balls with your rental.

Golf irons

The latest rental clubs are available at all Lowcountry courses.

If you do bring your own clubs, all of the course operators will handle shipping for you (ShipSticks seems to be the most popular method, Palmetto Dunes even has a direct link to them on their website).

Sea Pines Director of Golf John Farrell gives a great analogy. “If you travel to ski, you wouldn’t think twice about leaving your skis at home and trying out the latest technology on the slopes. Why not do it with golf clubs?”

The trip to the airport will be much, much easier too. And who knows? The rentals might improve your game!
